The Whys of Life – Daniella Stagg

“Maybe the solution that you are praying for and asking God, and you think He is not answering, but God sees better solutions than you. And He answers at the right moment.”

In 2023, Daniella was finishing her final year of university when her family received the heartbreaking news that her mother had cancer. As any of us would, Daniella asked God: “Why is this happening?” It was one of the most significant “whys” she would ever ask.

The doctors informed her that her mother needed to fly to the Philippines for treatment, but her family didn’t have the finances to cover the costs. Despite Daniella’s best efforts, she couldn’t gather the necessary funds. “God, you perform miracles; I know this is pocket change for You,” she prayed. “Why is there so much delay?”

Sometimes, we don’t need to understand the “why,” but instead, trust that God is in control. Daniela thought of Job, who had endured so much yet was blessed by God. If God had been faithful to Job, Daniela trusted He would be faithful in her life, too. She prayed, “I don’t understand the situation with my mom, but it’s hard to say it’s okay for You to take someone I love.” Daniela had to surrender her mom’s life to God’s will, even when she feared the worst: that her mother might die from cancer. “Surrendering my mom’s life to God was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.”

As the weeks passed, God revealed something Daniela hadn’t expected: the money wasn’t needed, and it wasn’t the best option for her mother to travel in her weakened condition. Daniela had been in a rush to send her mom for treatment, but God had a different plan. The questions of “why” still lingered, but God answered in His way by healing her mom without treatment. In the end, there was no need for the trip to the Philippines.

Like Job, Daniela chose to praise God regardless of the circumstances. She recognized God’s faithfulness in her life. Years later, Daniela did fly to the Philippines but this time, to serve as a Digital Missionary with AWR’s Center of Digital Evangelism.

Even now, Daniela still asks God, “Why?” There are so many unanswered questions, but she knows that God sees the future and guides every step she takes. It’s better to wait for His timing, for as He promises in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”
